LACK OF HUMAN RESOURCES
Across the board, employers in the Grande Prairie region struggled to fill available positions in 2005/ 2006 in all sectors. Whether it was qualified trades people, or entry level positions in the hospitality sector, the bottom line was that the area was in need of people.
What did the Chamber do?
Two initiatives in 2005 / 2006 that the Chamber embarked on to address the dilemma with human resources were co-chairing The ONE Conference: Outlook on Northern Employment, as well as creating ‘on2careers’, an employment matching service between members and job prospects.
The ONE Conference saw 200 delegates take in 2 days of discussion at the end of October with over 15 different speakers on recruitment and retention strategies for employers in a variety of areas, including the trades, small and large business, and human resource professional settings. The keynote speaker included David Foot, a professor of economics at the University of Toronto and author of the book series ‘Boom, Bust & Echo.”
on2careers stands as an employment matching service between member businesses and potential job prospects. In January of 2006, the launch of the official website of the program takes place and will see a variety of features, including available job postings in a variety of sectors, an update on trends and developments in human resources, and profiles of employers and employees and their individual stories with respect to employment. As well, on2careers will involve the Chamber investigating other communities across the country in an attempt to secure people to the region for work.
