The City of Grande Prairie has had a sustained population growth since 1918 at the time of its first census (as a village) when the population was 500. It was incorporated as a City in 1958 when its population was 6,500. Since that time growth has continued with a surge in the 1970's and early 1980's and another in the mid-1990's.
